Roll-In Fibreglass Shower

Roll-in Fibreglass Shower

This photograph shows a 5-piece low threshold fiberglass shower that can be used as a replacement for an existing bathtub.

A primary advantage of a fiberglass unit is that the entire project can be completed in 2 working days. This can be particularly attractive for homeowners when there is only one bathroom in the house.

A collapsible water retainer threshold and a plastic ramp kit can be installed at the front lip if desired.

Roll in Fibreglass Shower Base & Ceramic Walls

Roll-in Fibreglass Shower Base with Ceramic Walls

In this system, a fiberglass base is used, but the walls are ceramic tile instead of fiberglass. This gives the homeowner the ability to customize the walls to suit the décor.

Roll-in Ceramic Shower

Roll-in Ceramic Shower

This photograph shows a low threshold ceramic tile shower enclosure. The bathtub and walls have been removed and replaced with a new ceramic tile enclosure.

The floor has a 1½” lip at the front edge and is sloped to the existing floor drain.

A collapsible water retainer threshold and a plastic ramp kit are installed at the front lip.

Roll-in Ceramic Shower with Trench Drain System

Rather than sloping the floor to a tub drain, a trench drain system can be used. The drain is placed parallel to the length of the shower, set flush with the bathroom floor and the shower floor sloped to the drain. The advantage of the trench drain system is that there is no lip at the front edge; the front edge of the shower floor is flush with the bathroom floor. Trench drains can only be used in wood frame construction where the floor joists run parallel to the length of the shower.

Basins & Adjustable Mirrors

Basins

Accessible basins are designed so that a wheelchair fits underneath to allow positioning close to the lip of the basin for ease of use. The semi-recessed “Marina” basin is installed with a 12” deep counter so the front half of the basin sits proud of the vanity edge. The counter can be made any length, clad with any colour laminate available and can be positioned at any height for added convenience. The plumbing drain line should be offset so that it doesn’t present an obstacle for a person in a wheelchair. To provide an attractive, finished appearance an 8”-deep skirt is attached to the front edge to conceal the plumbing.

Basins & Adjustable Mirrors

Adjustable Mirrors

Adjustable mirrors are user-friendly and accessible whether a person uses a mirror from a seated position or standing. The wall supports and frames are made of nylon and the mirrors have rounded edges with freely adjustable up and down angles.

Shower Seats

Grab Bars & Shower Seats

GRAB BARS: Grab bars are available in stock or custom configurations in either stainless steel or nylon covered aluminum. The nylon grab bars come in many colors to match your décor, are not cold to the touch and are anti-bacterial. Grab bar configuration and layout is a matter of personal preference. The selection will depend on transfer requirements, the physical layout of the space and whether the client is left-side or right-side dependent. When installing grab bars make certain that the walls to which they are mounted are properly reinforced.

SHOWER SEATS: For added safety and comfort in the shower, nylon or phenolic shower seats are available for a bathroom retrofit. Phenolic seats can be attached to the wall of the shower or can be provided with legs for support. The nylon shower seat can be suspended from support bars to facilitate movement anywhere in the shower or alternatively, can be attached to the wall and “folded” up or down as required.

Toilets

A standard toilet is approximately 15 ½” high from the floor to the top of the rim. To raise the height of a toilet there are 3 available options. These options can be used separately or in combination:

1.

Raised toilets – there are a number of different models of raised toilets, varying in height from 16 ½” to 18” (floor to top of rim), depending on the model. Their appearance is indistinguishable from a regular toilet

2.

“Toilevator” – a 3 ½” high plastic spacer that fits between the floor and the bottom of the toilet.

3.

Raised toilet seat – a toilet seat with bumpers or spacers on the bottom side. The bumpers can be either 3” or 4” high. (as shown in this photo)
