ACCESS
RAMP Installation: |
|
|
Access Ramps Must be constructed in accordance
with section 3.8.8.4 of the Ontario Building Code. Some of
the critical specifications are:
1) |
The minimum width between handrails must be 2’
- 10” |
2) |
The maximum gradient or slope is 1:12. This means
that the ramp must be 1’ long for every inch of
rise |
3) |
There must be a level area 5’ long and at
least the same width of ramp at intervals of not more
than 29’ - 6” as well as whenever there
is an abrupt change in the ramp’s direction |
4) |
There must be handrails set 3’ above the
surface of the ramp on both sides of the ramp |
HANDRAILS:
Are provided to assist in balance and transfer.
In many instances, a grab bar can double as a handrail. It
is essential that the transfer abilities of each customer
be taken into consideration when determining the correct position
for placement of any handrails.
MATERIALS:
Residential access ramps are traditionally constructed of
wood but can be made of other materials such as concrete or
molded plastic. They can even be made to blend in with a home
landscaping design.
