ACCESS RAMP Installation:

Access Ramps Must be constructed in accordance with section 3.8.8.4 of the Ontario Building Code. Some of the critical specifications are:

1)

The minimum width between handrails must be 2’ - 10”

2)

The maximum gradient or slope is 1:12. This means that the ramp must be 1’ long for every inch of rise

3)

There must be a level area 5’ long and at least the same width of ramp at intervals of not more than 29’ - 6” as well as whenever there is an abrupt change in the ramp’s direction

4)

There must be handrails set 3’ above the surface of the ramp on both sides of the ramp

HANDRAILS:

Are provided to assist in balance and transfer. In many instances, a grab bar can double as a handrail. It is essential that the transfer abilities of each customer be taken into consideration when determining the correct position for placement of any handrails.

MATERIALS:

Residential access ramps are traditionally constructed of wood but can be made of other materials such as concrete or molded plastic. They can even be made to blend in with a home landscaping design.
